Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) is excited to announce that Chris Thompson will serve as the school’s associate vice president of distance learning and academic support beginning Aug. 1.
“Chris is a gifted, talented and winsome person who has the Southeastern Great Commission DNA,” said SEBTS President Danny Akin. “He is a wonderful addition to our team.”
For the past five years, Thompson has served as associate publisher at B&H Academic Publishing in Nashville, Tennessee. In this role, Thompson has led his team in print and digital acquisitions, marketing strategy, content editing and design. He also works in conjuction with Wordsearch Bible software, providing consultation in regard to digital textbooks, learning platforms and educational partnerships.
Prior to his time at B&H Academic, Thompson served as associate director of distance learning for five years and, prior to that, as assistant registrar. Thompson is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Christian leadership at SEBTS, where he also graduated with his Master of Divinity in 2011. Thompson is also a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 2002.
During Thompson’s time as associate director of distance learning, he helped to create a more extensive, robust online learning experience for distance learning students by working with faculty to extend their campus courses to online and hybrid formats. In addition, he oversaw the creation of three free online courses (Massive Open Online Courses, MOOC’s) and the creation of conference courses in conjunction with Together for the Gospel, 9Marks and the Go Conference (then 20/20 Conference).
“The faculty and staff at Southeastern have played a significant role in my life, and it’s an honor to work alongside them to serve the Church in this strategic role,” said Thompson.
Thompson is well-versed in project and team management throughout his time at SEBTS and more recently at B&H Academic. He has taught various leadership and evangelism courses on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
“My personal mission statement is to equip global leaders and learners who help others know, believe and rest in the gospel,” Thompson. “I don’t know of a better place to pursue this mission than at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.”
